Visuals

It is with great pleasure that CareWest provides each preschool service in Central West, Orana Far West and the Riverina Murray with a copy of the DVD ‘Using Visuals to Support Children’s Learning’.
This well-received 15 minute DVD demonstrates how to use visual supports to promote communication, social skills, general learning and participation amongst all children in early childhood settings. This resource was produced by Riverina Murray ECIC and significantly sponsored by CareWest and ADHC. The launch of the DVD was sponsored by Wagga Wagga City Council.

The purpose of the resource is to support the inclusive use of visuals in Early Childhood Education and Care settings to support children’s learning and participation.
Visual supports refer to the use of objects, photos and pictures. They assist children to understand language, follow routines and to transition between activities. Visual supports promote independence, play and social skills. An important point to remember is that visuals can be inclusive of all children in your environment not just those children with communication, listening or attention difficulties. A visual support often leaves a longer lasting impression with children than spoken words do. Visual supports are beneficial to all children’s learning and participation.
This resource maybe used in a variety of ways:
-  At team  meetings to increase all educators understanding of the benefits of inclusively using visuals
With new educators as part of their orientation process
With families to increase their understanding of how visuals support children’s learning and participation
If you have further questions about the inclusive use of visuals we encourage you to contact your local Inclusion Support Agency, SCAN project officer and or early childhood intervention service.
