Ability Technology

Dr Graeme W. Smith from Ability Technology recently presented two iPads and More workshops in Albury.
Graeme provided the attendees with an immense amount of information regarding the varied and diverse possibilities for technology and how mixed abilities can access and make use of the world as a result.  His insight provided us with a better understanding of 'what's out there' and how to make informed decisions about what would be relevant and most useful for our varied environments.  The research he and his team are conducting is openly shared in a regular newsletter that anyone can sign up for.  The website www.ability.org.au hosts a plethora of information regarding comparisons of tablets, apps and assistive technology. Recently, Graeme also launched the Ability House www.abilityhouse.org.au.  It's certainly worth taking a virtual tour of this house, and seeing firsthand the possibilities to support and enhance quality of life.  As an educator, I was excited to hear Graeme's enthusiasm to take this concept into areas of play, schools, and so forth.  Listen out for future developments - if you can think it, Graeme will most likely explore it!
Graeme also shared with us all information regarding a new equipment loan pool.  Launched by Enable in collaboration with the Ability Technology team, it is now possible to trial new equipment to assess for the individual the scope and possibilities prior to purchase.  Specialist occupational therapy services are also available to assist in choosing a device, setting it up and learning how to use it. Application information and a stock list is available at: enable.health.nsw.gov.au/home/services/ecs or contact Gemma on 02 99079736.
